Becoming pregnant does not mean that your fitness regime has to stop.

Other than perhaps slight modifications, there is no reason why you cannot continue to maintain your current fitness level throughout your pregnancy.

Boxing training is a great way to keep in shape both physically, and mentally. The fact that you will continue to burn off unwanted calories, develop your cardiovascular system, and improve both your muscular strength and muscular endurance, means that not only will you be in a great position after the birth of your child to get back into your pre-birth training routine, but you will also have the extra energy to care for your new born.

Physical Benefits

Many women complain about the discomfort they experience during pregnancy, which includes swollen ankles and physical tiredness. If you incorporate boxing training, or any other form of training into your pregnancy, not only will this help your swollen ankles (through the improvement of blood flow), it will also give you more energy (due to an increase in strength and endurance), providing you with more oomph, which in turn will help you to feel less tired.

The push-ups, punching of the focus mitts and heavy bag, will not only develop your boxing skills and cardiovascular system, as well improve your muscular strength and endurance, but will also assist with the alleviation of any physical discomfort that may accompany pregnancy.

Mental Benefits

Pregnancy may be a contributory factor to developing insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression. The fact that you are undergoing so many physical and mental changes may be unsettling for you, however through the use of boxing training you will be able to combat the lack of sleep, stress, anxiety and depression.

The fact that each time you train you will be releasing endorphins means that you will experience a feeling of calmness afterwards. Therefore, the more you train, the more relaxed you will feel during pregnancy. This in turn means less stress, anxiety and sleepless nights.

One final benefit of boxing training whilst pregnant is the fact that training will increase your level of confidence. This is twofold however, as not only will you improve your level of confidence through the development of your boxing skills (making you feel safer, more alert, and feel you are in a better position to look after yourself and family), it will also give you confidence due to the fact that you will feel, as well as look much more active/ healthy (the old adage of ‘if you look good, you feel good’).

Ultimately boxing training (or any other form of training for that matter) is a great way to keep fit whilst pregnant. Not only will it assist you both mentally as well as physically, it will also be of benefit to your baby, as they are dependent on you and your body, post, but maybe more importantly, pre birth. The general rule is that a healthy mind and body not only increases the chances of a healthy baby, but may also reduce the length of labour.
