Itching during pregnancy is a normal complaint from most pregnant women.

Itching during pregnancy is a normal complaint from most pregnant women. As the abdomen, breasts, and hips expand, the skin becomes dry and often cracks. This can cause severe itching and discomfort. Hormonal changes can also affect your body and skin and make it more susceptible to itching. Pregnant women are now providing water for two so it takes more water to keep the body running smoothly and that is important to understand when it comes to itching.

Since the human skin is the largest organ of the human body, it takes plenty of water and care to keep it healthy. Pregnancy is not the time to skimp on water and treating the body to plenty of moisturizing lotions that help calm itching. Aveeno makes a lotion that especially calming and their products contain natural ingredients that don't usually irritate sensitive skin.

There are some rare conditions which may cause itching and that often require the evaluation and treatment by a doctor. However, keep in mind that those conditions are not common and becoming alarmed about itching during pregnancy is not necessary. Watch for these potential signs of problems related to itching:

One potential condition that occurs during pregnancy is called PUPPPs. This is a condition that occurs in only about 1% of pregnant women and it is more often a problem for women carrying male babies. It materializes as itching, red bumps or hives. Seeking a doctor’s advice for treatment is recommended if you suspect you have PUPPPs.

Another potential cause of itching is Fifth Disease which is characterized by a rash on the face and/or extremities. Skin becomes very red and irritated. If you believe you have this disease, it’s important to seek a doctor’s care and advice to avoid potential problems during pregnancy.

Although these conditions may be present during pregnancy, it is likely that you are experiencing normal skin problems that most all women experience. Take care of your skin and treat your body well during pregnancy to help alleviate the discomfort of itching. Consider the following tips:

  1. Take cool showers and always rinse in cooler water after a bath or shower. Hot water dries out skin and makes it more susceptible to itching.
  2. Use a mild soap or oatmeal bath to help soothe itching skin. Harsh soaps or cleansers containing perfumes and other additives can worsen the condition.
  3. Never use salt-based exfoliants since they will dry skin out even more. Use sugar-based products instead and always follow any exfoliation with a good quality moisturizer.
  4. Use a good moisturizing lotion after each bath or shower. Keeping skin moist and hydrated is an important way to avoid itching. All natural lotions are easier on sensitive skin and don't contain products that can dry-out skin even more.
  5. Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated too. This is especially important during the hot, dry summer months.
  6. Avoid the sun and always use a good quality sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Sun is a culprit when it comes to itching any time, but especially during pregnancy when hormones may make skin more sensitive than ever before. Neutrogena with SPF 70 is a great product to consider.

Always contact your doctor or healthcare provider if you experience unusual itching, rashes, or other skin conditions during pregnancy. It is likely that you are just experiencing normal skin changes during pregnancy but only your doctor can properly diagnosis and treat your condition.

Enjoy your pregnancy and take good care of you and your baby. Before you know it, you’ll be holding your precious bundle of love in your arms!
