Fathers play a key role in contributing to healthier pregnancies. Providing support and encouragement to their partners is just one way dads become more involved.

Pregnancy is an exciting time in the life of a woman. Nurturing an unborn baby is a special time in her life. But it’s also a very important time for the father of the baby too. Unfortunately, many fathers feel left out and excluded from this experience. They are unsure how to become more involved and they experience confusion, concern, and even fear.

Involving the father throughout the pregnancy is an important part of the emotional experience for everyone. It’s a time when dad can become more emotionally attached and provide much needed support and encouragement for his partner.

Being a part of that first visit to the doctor and all subsequent doctor visits is an incredible way for dads to stay actively involved throughout the pregnancy -- and to gain a better understanding of what is happening as the baby grows and develops. It’s also the best way to understand how the pregnancy is affecting his partner and identifying ways he can provide greater support and encouragement.

Follow-up Prenatal Visits

As pregnancy progresses, fathers learn so much more about the baby by participating in each prenatal visit. Each doctor visit results in new experiences and a closer look at the baby’s development. Fathers can become much more involved as they experience:

  1. Hearing the baby’s heartbeat for the first time.
  2. Seeing the developing baby through ultrasounds and other tests.
  3. Learning the sex of the baby for the first time together with the mother.
  4. Gaining a better understanding of what to expect during labor and delivery.
  5. Hearing recommendations first-hand from the doctor on how to offer care and support for his partner and their unborn baby.

There is so much to learn through each prenatal visit and fathers who are actively involved in this process have a closer emotional attachment to the baby before he/she is born. Dads also have a greater sense of what is needed to provide care and support for their partner throughout the pregnancy.

Dads Offer Support

Dads can offer a tremendous amount of support throughout the pregnancy. Open communication is important for both the new mom and dad as they experience this new adventure together. Whether it’s the first, second, or third pregnancy, the dad’s support is essential because each and every pregnancy is different and each baby is special.

Some ways that dads can become more involved and offer greater support during pregnancy include:

  1. Help partners choose healthy, nutritious foods.
  2. Support the mother’s efforts to get daily exercise and remain active.
  3. Keep pregnant women away from hazardous household cleaners and other substances. Do much of the cleaning to relieve the woman of this responsibility during pregnancy.
  4. Take care of daily responsibilities to enable the mom to get more rest. Pregnant women need lots of rest for themselves and their developing babies.
  5. Attend child-birth classes together. Being more involved means being more informed about what to expect during labor and delivery.
  6. Demonstrate love and affection through actions and words. Hormones are creating new and different feelings and it’s important to find ways to share intimate moments together.

Stay Involved

Being involved during the pregnancy is essential to support the bonding between a father and an unborn child. But involvement doesn’t end when the baby is born. It is just beginning.

Get involved, stay involved, and enjoy the special times during and after pregnancy. A father who takes this role seriously and who becomes involved at deeper levels will create much stronger bonds and relationships with his partner and their new baby.
