Gallstones can be extremely painful and a nuisance, especially while pregnant. Knowing how to avoid attacks and soothe pain is essential for a healthy pregnancy.

Gallstones are a common and painful "joy" of pregnancy. If caught early enough, the gallbladder can be removed, but only if symptoms are severe enough. Most doctors and pregnant mothers prefer to wait until after the baby is born to avoid any pregnancy complications from surgery.

Where is Gallbladder Pain Felt?

Gallbladder pain is centered at the right upper abdomen, where the gallbladder is located, and radiates towards the entire right side of the body. The right shoulder, and upper right back will feel sore and restless as the pain moves to these parts of the body. It is important to soothe the pain since it can stress out a pregnant woman causing stress to the fetus.

Avoid Eating Fatty and Acidic Foods

Just the smell of fatty foods like steaks, hamburgers, and bacon will be enough to make the gallbladder act up. The gallbladder's purpose is to aid the liver in digesting fat. If the liver doesn't have to work as hard, then the gallbladder isn't called upon for help. Also avoid eating acidic and spicy foods like lemons and peppers which are actually used as a home-remedy to pass stones. Stick to an ultra-low-fat diet to avoid gallbladder flare ups.

Use Heat to Soothe Gallbladder Pain

Buy a small heat pad or a hot water bottle to apply heat over the gallbladder. Heat relieves and soothes minor pain the area. Laying on a heat pad or electric blanket will relieve back pain that radiates from the gallbladder outwards. Try laying down on the right side of the body over a heat pad with a hot water bottle nestled onto the abdomen or over the right shoulder for ultimate relief. Taking a hot shower and letting the water hit the right side of body is also a great source of relief.

Staying Calm and Knowing the Pain will Pass

It is important to stay calm with minor gallbladder pain. If not throwing up, or in severe pain, use heat therapy and relax. Stress is bad for the fetus, and while the mother is in pain, the fetus is unaware of anything besides the mother's stress. The goal is to keep the gallbladder calm and not contract since a contracting gallbladder could potentially pass a stone.

If abdominal and muscular pain is intense, increasing, or if the mother starts to vomit, it is important to head to the hospital immediately. Vomiting and excruciating pain are signs that the mother is passing a stone which can be very dangerous. Passing a stone could potentially cause pancreatitis, a life threatening condition. All symptoms should be discussed with the pregnant mother's OBGYN.

These are home remedies and are not intended to replace or be medical advice. Consult your doctor if gallbladder like symptoms erupt or remain consistent.
